The Abnormal State (Chinese 奇烈态) is a state that has only been seen utilized by select monster species. Indicated by a crimson aura that surrounds the monster, this state enhances the affected monster's strength, durability, and attacks. Within Monster Hunter Online, two variations of the Abnormal State exists: an older version where the affected monster only gains alterations to existing attacks, and the newest version where monsters gains significantly changed movesets and new armor sets with an exclusive skill.

- Abnormal Nargacuga, Deviljho, Black Diablos, Silver Rathalos, Onimusha, and Tigrex all borrow moves and techniques utilized by Lucent Nargacuga, Frontier's variation of Savage Deviljho, Bloodbath Diablos, Dreadking Rathalos, Rustrazor Ceanataur, and Zenith Tigrex respectively.
- The second version of Abnormal Tigrex is unique in that, unlike any other Abnormal monster, its body has been significantly altered to resemble the Tigrex variation it is based on.
- Some of the first generation Abnormal monsters have been removed from the game since the introduction of the second version of the state.
