In-Game Information

MH3U-Abyssal Lagiacrus Icon

A rare species of Lagiacrus known only from an ancient scroll: From the abyss' darkest cave, Comes the master of the wave, Consumer of the world entire, Devil of the sea most dire,  Fear it as you fear the grave.

Taxonomy

Order:Leviathan- Suborder:Sea Wyvern- Infraorder:Thunder Shell Wyvern- Family:Lagiacrus. Abyssal Lagiacrus is a Leviathan, like its white and blue relatives and other monsters such as Uroktor, Agnaktor, its subspecies, Gobul, Ludroth, Royal Ludroth, its subspecies, Nibelsnarf and Kuarusepusu. This Leviathan is rarely seen due to its habit of hunting for prey in the dark depths of the ocean. Its existence has been known for many years but remained impossible to prove as it was only in ancient text. It is unknown if it is truly a subspecies or alternate species.

Habitat Range

This variant of Lagiacrus is a deep-sea dwelling monster. The only known place to encounter this creature is the Underwater Ruin. However since such an area holds little food besides fish and small crustaceans the Abyssal Lagiacrus will venture out into the ocean where prey such as Epioth, Sharqs, and many other creatures are found. It is unknown if the Abyssal Lagiacrus like its two relatives will travel to the Flooded Forest. It is highly likely that with its large size, strength, and powerful electrical attacks which are even more powerful than its relatives, would be with no doubt be an apex predator in this habitat. By being such powerful swimmers, Abyssal Lagiacrus and its two relatives are highly capable of traveling to areas not of their homeland such as the Old Jungle, Jungle, and Tide Island.

Ecological Niche

With its large size and strength added with extremely powerful electric attacks the Abyssal Lagiacrus is with no doubt an apex predator. The only other creatures seen inhabiting the Underwater Ruin with this Leviathan are Ceadeus and its subspecies, yet intense competition may occur if the two were to meet. The Lagiacrus is smaller and most likely less powerful than the Ceadeus, but it has much stronger, damaging attacks (such as the wide range lightning charge) and has a greater speed advantage, so a battle between the two may occur. Due to the lack of food in the Underwater Ruin the Abyssal Lagiacrus will travel out into the ocean where they can unleash deadly ambush attacks through their dark coloration on creatures such as Epioth, Sharqs, Ludroth, and even Royal Ludroth from below. Other predators such as Plesioth and its subspecies will avoid the Leviathan at all cost due to the Piscine Wyvern's major weakness against the Leviathan's electrical attacks and if struck with a powerful enough charge could leave the creatures mortally wounded or paralyzed. It is possible that the Abyssal Lagiacrus travels to the Flooded Forest where they along with their relatives establish themselves as apex predators where they can prey on Aptonoth, Slagtoth, Great Wroggi, Bulldrome, and even Arzuros. Gobul will also avoid it along with its relatives at all costs as well due to being vulnerable to electrical attacks. However in the Flooded Forest these creatures would come into contact with other large predators such as Nargacuga and its subspecies, Rathian, and the voracious Deviljho. But due to these creatures vulnerability against electricity the powerful Leviathans most likely survive such violent encounters.

Biological Adaptations

The Abyssal Lagiacrus lives in the depths that only Ceadeus can reach, which means that it must have stronger lungs and harder shells than other Lagiacrus variants in order to survive the extreme pressure. Though very few Abyssal Lagiacrus have ever been encountered, information gleamed from the Hunter-killed and naturally killed corpses provides some telling information. In comparison to the Lagiacrus or its Ivory subspecies, the Abyssal Lagiacrus has a very flexible ribcage. It is believed that this allows its lungs to temporarily collapse, reducing its nitrogen intake. Given this adaptation, it is likely that the creature's metabolism can also slow down, so as to reduce the consumption of oxygen, although this (like much of the creature's biology) is only speculation. How the Abyssal Lagiacrus manages to avoid the issue of decompression sickness is a complete mystery.

A mysterious factor of this creature's biology is that it has a much stronger electrical charge, several orders of voltage and amperage in magnitude. Why this creature has a stronger electrical charge is not fully understood, and theories range from paralyzing larger and hardier prey items to some other, unknown factor.

Another adaptation that strikes a stark contrast to the onyx black scales of this lagia is its multiple points of bio-luminescence. It is theorized that the arangement of these bioluminescent points on the Abyssal Lagiacrus' body are arranged in such a way as to mimic a school of bioluminescent fish, the black coloration of the scales serving to disguise the bulk of the creature in its sunless enviornment. When diving down to deep depths the spikes on this Leviathan's body glow bright blue in order to attract inquisitive prey to the Leviathan's jaws filled with large teeth.

Abyssal Lagiacrus' life cycle is harder to determine than other of its cousins, since they tend to inhabit habitats that are too hazardous for most hunters to spend prolonged periods of time observing. Abyssal lagia generally don't compete with their cousins, as the common Lagiacrus tends to inhabit shallower waters and the Ivory Lagiacrus tends to hunt on shore-lines and land. While common Lagiacrus and Ivory Lagiacrus occasionally find themselves in overlapping habitats, Abyssal Lagiacrus virtually never meet other Lagiacrus species due to the depths at which they live.

Behavior

Like other Lagiacrus brethren, it is highly (and even more) aggressive towards humans in vicinity. As to each other they would likely to stay away from and give space to each other. Ultimately, given the depths at which it lives and the rarity of encounters, there is very little overall we know about its behavior.
