Aurora Somnacanth is a Leviathan and Subspecies of Somnacanth first introduced in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak.
Appearance
Aurora Somnacanth is similar in appearance to Somnacanth, however, its body is pale yellow, while its fins are ice-blue with some dark purple gradient. The bioluminescence is white instead of light blue, and frost can be seen forming on its head-crest and tail.
Habitat
Similar to Somnacanth, its lives in a limited amount of locales, mainly sighted in cold regions like the Frost Islands and the Citadel.
Abilities
Instead of sleep mist, Aurora Somnacanth uses powerful ice attacks in combat. The Subspecies' Cryo Sac is the source of its icy powers. These include an ice beam and a cry that can cause several frost explosions. Aurora Somnacanth spends more time on land than its counterpart. Its abilities are said to be functionally identical to that of Barioth's and Goss Harag's, Aurora Somnacanth can uses its Cryo Sac to unleashe cold air from within its body. This icy mist can freeze an broad area instantly. Aurora Somnacanth freezes its surrounding areas, as well as the ground, allowing it to more swiftly around enemies and prey.
Behavior
Like its counterpart, Aurora Somnacanth is an aggressive monster that attack anyone who invades its territory. It uses its siren like voice to lure prey in before freezing them to death. It does this by sliding around the ice, circling its prey, then ice abilities to slow the prey's stamina, before going for the kill. It will then drag away its prey to eat in a hidden location. It preys on small monsters like Izuchi. Aurora Somnacanth also has territorial disputes with monsters such as Aknosom. The Aknosom is hates the most due to the Bird Wyvern's flame disrupting Aurora Somnacanth's cold air. More often, it chases the monster out of its area.

- Aurora Somnacanth was voted 225th place in the Hunters' Choice for Top Monster during Monster Hunter's 20th Anniversary.
- This makes Aurora Somnacanth the lowest placing Sunbreak monster, with Rise’s (and the 5th generation as a whole) lowest place monster being Apex Arzuros at 226th place.
