Another feature of Bazelgeuse is it's enormous body mass, unusual for Wyverns capable of flight. This accompanied with a blast-resistant carapace, notable muscle strength and powerful wings make Bazelgeuse walking physical powerhouses. Bazelgeuse often use this advantage in forms of full-fledged dive bombs against their target, letting themselves crash-land into the ground for maximum impact, a maneuver that could have been ineffective or even self-harming if used by other Flying Wyverns like Rathalos or Legiana.

In-Game Information

MHW-Bazelgeuse Icon

A nefarious flying wyvern that travels the New World in search of prey. It scatters explosive scales over a wide area to prey on whatever gets caught in the blast.

Taxonomy

  • Order: Saurischia
  • Suborder: Wyvern Feet
  • Infraorder: Explosive Scale Wyvern
  • Superfamily: Flying Wyvern
  • Family: Bazelgeuse

Habitat Range

Bazelgeuse are mostly found in the New World, though they have been seen in the old world on rare occasion.[1] They are nomadic predators and can be found all across the continent. However their main habitat is the Elder's Recess discovered by a biologist who had been investigating the flying bombers.

Ecological Niche

Bazelgeuse easily assert themselves as apex monsters in whatever environment they pass through, disrupting the local food chain, similar to the Deviljho to which the Flying Wyvern is considered a direct, if not the only true competition of, being monsters of enormous might surpassed only by Elder Dragons. A Bazelgeuse will almost always take fight against a Deviljho as soon as it spots one and vice versa. The presence of both species is vital to the New World, as their rivalry prevents one from overwhelming the ecosystem entirely. It should be noted that the Bazelguese is one of the few monsters able to stand at least toe-to-toe with a Deviljho if only because of their unique biology. Despite having a similar behavior as the Deviljho unlike the Brute Wyvern it doesn't viciously prey upon smaller monsters at random only attacking larger monsters as a sign of dominance. Whereas a Deviljho will devour anything and everything to satisfy it's endless need for energy.

The only time Bazelgeuse's dominance upon a locale seem to be completely undermined is during the presence of Elder Dragons.

Biological Adaptations

The Bazelgeuse's most distinctive trait is its ability to shed explosive scales. These special scales are created by solidifying its body fluids.[2] Once dislodged, these scales usually remain inert until they're struck with enough force (such as the Bazelgeuse itself), acting as a sort of landmine. However, when the monster enters its "super-heated" state, the scales detonate almost immediately and with more force increasing their damage overall. It uses its enormous body to overwhelm other monsters and the power of its scales to soften them up. Interestingly, the ability to use scales as a weapon is shared by one other monster the Seregios. These scales also work as an effective repulse defense as noted when a Deviljho attacks in a turf war when it bites Bazelgeuse's underside the scales explode violently forcing Deviljho to let go while damaging it in the process.

A testament of Bazelgeuse strength is that the Wyverns were witnessed to be able to successfully struggle off Deviljho's gripping bite, forcing the Brute Wyvern to use all their body weight in an attempt to pin it down, a feat that not even Diablos could do.

Behavior

Bazelgeuse will shed their explosive scales over a wide area in a sort of carpet bombing so they can prey on whatever gets caught in the blast. They are aggressive creatures, and will readily fight other large monsters. They will even dive into fights that doesn't even involve them and can be seen as having a lust for combat. They will attack monsters regardless of their standing but seem to gravitate more towards other apex monsters. Regardless of such aggressive behavior, Bazelgeuse would abandon a locale in presence of an Elder Dragons like most monsters do.
