Monster Hunter Wiki

Flaming Espinas is a Subspecies of Espinas introduced in Monster Hunter Frontier Season 2.5.

Physiology

Flaming Espinas features a brown carapace with red spines, claws, and horns. When enraged, its body is covered in glowing orange veins. It is otherwise identical to the common Espinas.

Abilities

Flaming Espinas is capable of producing larger and more powerful bursts of fire than the common Espinas, and is more resistant to damage. Instead of inflicting Paralysis, its breath now contains a concentrated acid that can melt the armor of their prey. Flaming Espinas' most noteworthy ability is the ability to charge up their breath attack before unleashing it in a single burst, which causes a massive fiery explosion that scatters toxic clouds.

Behavior

Similarly to the common Espinas, it is a docile and passive wyvern which will only attack when provoked. It sleeps for much of the day, and is usually encountered in this state. Similar to the common Espinas, this monster is powerful enough to face and even defeat Elder Dragons such as the Teostra.

Habitat

Flaming Espinas is known to inhabit the Tower and Forlorn Arena (MHRS), where it resides in solitude at the very top. In addition, it can be found in the Gorge, Citadel, and at the Great Forest Peak.

Other Non-Subspecies Forms

Hard Core (HC) Flaming Espinas

SR51+ required to hunt.

Members of the Flaming Espinas with longer, more developed spikes down the middle of its back as well as more spikes on its wings, all with a white tip including the horn. They are more aggressive and more vibrant when enraged as their veins glow an unusual green.

Like HC common Espinas, they have the ability to charge at incredible speeds, scratching the ground as the only warning. A new attack they perform is ducking down while charging up a giant fireball similar to the ones they make huge explosions with, only it spits it into the sky, which bursts into multiple balls that rain on its enemies with incredible precision aimed at up to four targets at once.

In-Game Description

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
An Espinas subspecies with a slightly more muted body color. The boldness of the standard Espinas remains: run-of-the-mill attacks won't rouse Flaming Espinas from their slumber. Their breath attack contains a powerful poison, and a dense acid that deteriorates armor. Take this attack head-on, and you won't stand a chance...

Notes

General Notes

    • Breaking one wing breaks both.
  • Flaming Espinas's roar requires HG Earplugs to block.
  • Before its localization for its Western debut, Flaming Espinas was simply referred to by a translation of its Japanese name, "Espinas Subspecies."
  • Flaming Espinas was voted 99th place in the Hunters' Choice for Top Monster during Monster Hunter's 20th Anniversary.[1]
    • While a mostly idle account, Monster Hunter Frontier's official Twitter/X account congratulated Espinas' and Flaming Espinas' ranking in the polls.[2]

    • Some of these additions specifically require other quest completions to unlock, Primordial Malzeno requiring Amatsu to be defeated, both Rath Rare Species requiring Seething Bazelgeuse's defeat, and Violet Mizutsune requring Flaming Espinas' defeat.
  • Flaming Espinas gains several new attacks; for example, it will now jump into the air, land, then spin around before jumping again and slamming its tail into the ground while landing.
  • After charging, Flaming Espinas can launch a fireball instead of charging again.
  • After reaching low enough HP, Flaming Espinas will launch its ultimate attack a second time by flying in the air to charge before firing.
