Gelidron are Amphibians first introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Physiology[]

The Gelidron is a relatively small Amphibian that is no larger than a human is tall. Overall, the creature closely resembles a giant salamander, with a portly body, rounded head with small, almost useless eyes, and a fat tail. Its head is a dark black, while the rest of the animal is a mix of blues and pinks, resembling the image of oil on water. When observed up-close, one can notice the entire body of the Gelidron is covered in a thick layer of translucent mucus that darkens as they submerge into the oil and tar of their native habitat. On their limbs (with 4 toes on the front pair, and 5 on the back) are gecko-like pads and sharp claws for climbing. Inside their mouth is a sticky pink tongue used to consume decent sized prey at high speed.

Behavior and Abilities[]

They appear to be mostly nocturnal and active during the night. The bulk of the Gelidron's diet is made up of oil-dwelling crustaceans, such as the Crudeshell Crabs, which it catches with lightning speed with its adhesive tongue before swallowing them whole. When faced with a small threat, Gelidron will open their mouths wide in a "yawning" gesture as a (rather ineffective) intimidation strategy. Otherwise, they simply flee for deeper oil pools to dive beneath and hide.

Gelidron live in large packs in the Oilwell Basin where they serve a vital base role in the regions food chain due to the lack of plant life and/or large herbivores. The high-quality meat they provide and apparent lack of effective defenses make the Gelidron an ideal target for many of the Basin's carnivores; particularly the Kranodath, who consume scores of the defenseless Amphibians in a single hunt, leaving their carcasses in grotesque piles for other scavengers to consume. Even the people of Azuz, The Everforge regularly cook and eat the Gelidron despite lacking a hunting culture. It is theorized that a high rate of reproduction is the only thing keeping these monsters from being hunted to extinction.

In-Game Description[]

Monster Hunter Wilds
Amphibians commonly found in Oilwell Basin. Subcutaneous slime protects them from getting burned. Gelidron lay ambushes, waiting to snap up prey with their big, meaty tongues. Fine hairs on their digits, combined with sharp claws, allow them to climb straight up walls. Unfortunately for the Gelidron, their edible parts are delicious, putting them in high demand with carnivores in the wild... as well as in Azuz.
