Pale moonlight, barely breaking through the clouds. A creature wanders restlessly through the darkness. Stepping firmly, never dropping its pace. Its entire body honed to perfection. Finally, the clouds split apart and the moon reveals itself. Silver light illuminates the land and the mountains. It dances, it runs, it trembles with unbridled power. And with an entranced roar, it shows its true form.
- Lunagaron, Moonlight Nocturne

Lunagaron is a Fanged Wyvern first introduced in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak.

Physiology

Lunagaron is a large, wolf-like Fanged Wyvern similar in appearance to New World Fanged Wyverns such as Odogaron and Tobi-Kadachi. Its body is covered in cobalt scales with white edges, with several ridges running down its back. When enraged, Lunagaron's body and claws will become covered in spikes of ice.

Abilities

Like other Fanged Wyverns, it is very agile and can easily climb up and jump off walls and large rocks. It is agile enough to perform several attacks in a row using its front legs and teeth, as well as acrobatic movements. Lunagaron can chill the air it inhales with a special organ, which then circulates throughout its body as a unique form of thermoregulation. It can also use this ability to form ice armor to protect itself, freeze its claws to enhance its physical attacks, and breathe freezing mist to impair foes. This ice supposedly cannot melt, even when exposed to the elements. Due to this, Lunagaron can survive in environments that are not cold.

Although normally quadrupedal, a sufficiently angered Lunagaron will reveal a "true form" attained by shutting off its thermoregulation and letting its heated muscles swell, in which it takes a bipedal stance. In this stance, it is more aggressive and will take advantage of its new stance to launch more dangerous attacks with its claws, such as rapid swipes and grapples. Shattering its ice armor will cause it to fall over and revert to its quadrupedal form.

Behavior

A born hunter, Lunagaron is highly aggressive and feeds on smaller monsters, including some smaller size large monsters like Aknosom. It often competes with other dangerous monsters like Zinogre, Garangolm and Malzeno/Primordial Malzeno, often in Turf Wars around various locales, such as the Citadel.

Habitat

Lunagaron is first encountered in the Shrine Ruins of Kamura; however, its main domain is the ice caverns of Elgado's Citadel. Due to its thermoregulation abilities and physicality allowing it to endure a wide variety of environments and temperatures, Lunagaron has been seen living in more temperate areas such as the Jungle (MHRS).

In-Game Description

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
Lunagaron have an organ that chills the air they inhale, circulating it throughout their body in a unique form of thermoregulation. They can travel long distances and endure environmental changes, allowing them to occupy a wide range of habitats. They usually walk on all fours, but can stand on two legs by shutting down their cooling mechanism, spiking their body temp to expand their muscles.
Threat Level (危険度): ★★★★★★★

Notes

General Notes

  • Lunagaron appears to be based on werewolves, and may as well Fenrir from Norse mythology, as many of its weapons feature a set of chains binding the weapons when sheathed that disappear when unsheathed. Perhaps the Beast of Gévaudan is another of Lunagaron's inspirations.
  • The way it inhales cold air to create ice armor may have been also inspired by the Big Bad Wolf in the traditional fairy tale "Three Little Pigs", where he destroys the pigs' houses by blowing on them.
  • Lunagaron is considered one of the "Three Lords" of Elgado, alongside Garangolm and Malzeno.
  • Lunagaron was voted 87th place in the Hunters' Choice for Top Monster during Monster Hunter's 20th Anniversary.[1]

Monster Hunter Rise

  • Lunagaron's head can be broken twice and its front legs and tail can also be broken.
  • As revealed in the final Digital Event for Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, Lunagaron was the second most-hunted monster in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak.
  • Lunagaron is poor at anti-air defense, its only option being some jumping attacks, since most of its ranged attacks go across the ground.
