Monster Hunter Wilds is an action role-playing game and the sixth entry of the main Monster Hunter series developed and published by Capcom. The player takes control of a Hunter, journeying to a new part of the world known as the Forbidden Lands in what Capcom describes as the most immersive story in the series. The game's largest change to the formula is introducing an expansive and living world, with both the areas themselves and the monsters within them feeling and behaving more lifelike than ever. The game was released on February 28, 2025 on Playstation 5, Xbox Series X, and Microsoft Windows simultaneously, and is the first entry in the series to allow crossplay between all major current-gen platforms.

Gameplay[]

The following information has been revealed through trailers, previews with content creators, and the official website:

  • The Hunter now has a raptor-like companion called a Seikret, which appears to serve a similar purpose to the Palamute, with the added ability of bounding between rock formations, gliding, and accessing equipment.
  • The armor system has received several changes:
    • Hunters may choose between armor designs that were previously designated as Male and Female regardless of their gender.
    • Set Bonuses can now be activated by the type of monster the armor originated from; for example, a full set comprised of armor from different Flying Wyverns will give the 'Flying Wyvern' Set Bonus.
  • The Hunter can now take two weapons into a hunt, and can swap between them by mounting their Seikret.
  • Hunting locations are significantly larger than previous games.
    • Hub areas now directly connect with hunting locations, meaning the player can start a quest and enter the hunting location without a loading screen.
    • Locales are now connected and can be transitioned without entering a quest, like moving from the Windward Plains to the Scarlet Forest
  • Starting a quest can now be done directly from the field.
    • Quests can now be ended immediately after completion instead of waiting for the timer.
    • Quests involving hunting monsters can start when dealing enough damage to that monster.
  • Areas can now go through significant changes in climate during and between hunts; each map has three states known as Plenty, Fallow, and Inclemency.
    • The Plenty state is characterized by lush vegetation, stable weather conditions, and large packs of herbivores.
    • The Fallow state is characterized by lower herbivore activity and less-than-ideal weather conditions.
    • The Inclemency state is characterized by hostile weather (such as sandstorms and heavy downpours for example) and the presence of dangerous monsters, such as Rey Dau and Uth Duna.
  • Turf Wars are now more elaborate, and can involve entire packs of the two monsters involved.
    • Turf Wars can be used to separate the leader of a pack from its followers; for example, a Doshaguma pack can be lured into a Balahara sand trap, which causes the smaller members to be dragged into the sand and allowing the leader to be fought alone.
  • Both large and small monsters can now appear in packs.
    • Packs of large monsters are led by an Alpha, with differences in size and coloring from the "lesser" pack members; they can be drawn away from the pack by using environmental hazards. So far, only the Doshaguma have a separate Alpha member.
  • Monsters may now appear in varying threat levels signifying their health and attack power, even on a single map, similarly to Monster Hunter Now.
  • 9 returning large monsters have been confirmed thus far, being Rathalos shown in the initial trailer, Yian Kut-Ku in the extended version of the 4th trailer, Congalala in the September 28th Livestream, Rathian in a blurry screenshot, Gypceros in the 2nd Open Beta reveal, Gravios in the cooking tutorial, Nerscylla and Gore Magala in the 6th trailer, and Blangonga in a commercial. 2 returning large monsters in the Title Updates are Mizutsune and Lagiacrus.
  • Crossplay has been confirmed for the game, allowing players of Steam, Xbox Series X, and PS5 to gather in the same lobbies and hunts.
  • Parts broken are now specific on which part of the monster is broken, such as Head Broken, Left Leg Broken, Stinger Broken.
  • Frenzied monsters from 4 Ultimate and Tempered and Arch-tempered monsters from World has returned. Tempered monsters now have battle scars that creates wounds easier.

Setting[]

The Forbidden Lands features the most expansive and lifelike environments ever seen in the series, with changing climates and wildlife that changes alongside it. It is a region that has only recently been cleared for exploration by the Guild, with the player being part of the first expedition into the area.
