Monster Hunter Wiki

This mysterious monster is known to the people of Azuz as the Black Flame.

Nu Udra is a Cephalopod introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Physiology[]

Nu Udra is a massive monster heavily resembling an octopus. It has six large limbs which it uses for locomotion and attacking, with its remaining two limbs being reduced and used to shield its mouth. Its dark green skin is covered in blue and black stripes, but at most times appears dark due to the creature being covered in a thick layer of black oilsilt at all times, which can be ignited at will when Nu Udra is enraged. The tentacles and mantle of the monster are covered in many thorny spines. Its most striking features are its bioluminescent blue eye stalks, along with glowing spots on the end of it's main six limbs; these glowing spots act as sensory organs as the cephalopod itself is mostly blind.

Similar to Xu Wu, it has offspring that hatch en masse known as Nu Yaya. Unlike Xu Wu's offspring however, they only seem to be present for a brief period of time, shortly after the end of the Firespring.

Behavior and Abilities[]

Much about Nu Udra's ecology is a mystery, although it is known to be most active during the "Firespring" inclemency of the Oilwell Basin.

As the apex predator of the Oilwell Basin, it is big and powerful enough to subdue and defeat powerful monsters like Ajarakan, able to hold two with its tentacles at once; it employs this grappling attack to pull hunters towards it so it can finish them off with fire from its siphon. Nu Udra mainly uses its tentacles to sense it's surroundings, as well as weapons to whip and smash enemies. It can additionally attack directly behind with its tentacles without needing to turn to face the hunter. Like real life octopuses, Nu Udra can burrow into the ground to ambush opponents and squeeze through tight spaces to escape from enemies.

When enraged it will open its eyes, its face glows bright orange and it will coat its whole body in fire, allowing it to launch oil fireballs, create heat waves, and whip opponents with its flaming tentacles. Nu Udra can spew large amounts of fire from its siphon to burn opponents from a distance. Its most powerful attack unleashes a furious rain of burning oil in all directions, however this attack extinguishes its fire, exhausts it, and forces it back to its base mode.

In-Game Description[]

Monster Hunter Wilds
The cephalopod that reigns supreme over Oilwell Basin's ecosystem. Usually when sighted, Nu Udra is covered in oilsilt, but when enraged it will ignite the coating, transfiguring itself into a horror of flame. The oculi that appear on its body and many arms are presumed to be sensory organs, but the truth is still being investigated.
Threat Level (危険度): ★-★★★★★

Notes[]

General Notes

  • Nu Udra is the first cephalopod type monster to not be classified as an Elder Dragon.
  • As Nu Udra primarily relies on sensory organs in its tentacles for detection instead of eye vision, it is immune to Flash Bombs.
  • Nu Udra has a turf war with Ajarakan.
  • Each of Nu Udra's tentacles can be cut and will continue to wriggle as if still alive until they rot, at which point they are no longer carve-able.
  • Tempered Nu Udra will always start out enraged and will remain so until it is knocked out of it.
    • Despite not being tempered this is also the case for the Nu Udra encountered during the High Rank part of the main story.
  • It seems to be a spiritual successor of Glavenus.
