Monster Hunter Wiki

Paolumu are Flying Wyverns first introduced in Monster Hunter: World.

Physiology[]

Paolumu is a bat-like wyvern that slightly resembles the Honduran white bat. Like said bat species, Paolumu is covered in white fur and has a pink face. Though it is covered in fur, Paolumu also has some brown scales covering its back, underbelly, and tail. The Paolumu has rodent-like buck teeth. This is because its diet consists of the eggs that come from the coral which Paolumu sucks in using its incredible breathing power. Paolumu's head, wings, and tail can be wounded.

Behavior and Abilities[]

Inside of Paolumu's neck is a special air sac that inflates once it has sucked in enough air. Once its air sac has inflated, Paolumu is able to float in the air like a balloon and able to attack foes from above. While floating, Paolumu will use its hard tail to batter foes at close range. Paolumu is also able to breathe wind at foes, it can also use its inhaling powers to draw in hunters closer or to make them stagger. Hunters can deflate Paolumu's neck by mounting it as well as attacking its neck.[1]

Paolumu are fairly calm unless provoked by a threat. Once provoked, they will become aggressive. Paolumu won't attack a hunter unless they attack it first. Paolumu is outclassed by Deviljho, Legiana[2], and Odogaron[3] in the Coral Highlands.

In-Game Description[]

Monster Hunter World
Paolumu feast on eggs found in the Coral Highlands. They are able to propel through the air using unique sacs in their bodies, and attack with their extremely hard tails.
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin
Paolumu inflate the sacs in their bodies to float in the air, directing their flight by exhaling this way or that. They can slow down their prey with bursts of compressed air to create an opening for a powerful tail attack.
Monster Hunter Now
A flying wyvern capable of storing large quantities of air within its body. By powerfully exhaling this air, it can travel afloat across the skies, delivering crushing blows with its hard tail.

Hunting Tips[]

By deeply inhaling, it can suck in unwary hunters alongside large quantities of air. Its inflated neck pouch can serve as a means by which to ground the beast if broken, allowing for its vulnerable head to be damaged. Take caution, however, as some specimens are capable of unleashing a violent tornado breath attack.

Notes[]

General Notes

  • While being a completely different classification, Paolumu's wing patterns are extremely similar to Pukei-Pukei's.
  • Paolumu’s neck pouch has jiggle physics.
  • Paolumu was voted 103rd place in the Hunters' Choice for Top Monster during Monster Hunter's 20th Anniversary.[4]
    • While other monsters either use their renders or use their standard pose facing left, both it and Nightshade Paolumu face the viewer in inflated mode, obscuring most of its body.
