The lord has once again settled in his rightful place.
To bring down the hammer of justice on the servants who betrayed him.
With swift attacks, he smites the wicked.
Hark, the cries of his traitors herald his return.
- Primordial Malzeno, Legend Resurrected

Primordial Malzeno is an Elder Dragon and Variant of Malzeno first introduced in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak.

Physiology[]

Primordial Malzeno greatly resembles a normal Malzeno, but has a more sturdy appearance, with most of its body, wings, and head crest being covered in silver and gold plates and blades resembling armor, and the parts of its body that were already gold becoming a darker, richer color. The Qurio are no longer present on its body, with the patch on its chest being replaced by a thicker section of armor plates, and its red wing membranes are now dark bluish-purple instead, with its horns also being less twisted.

When infested by the Qurio, Primordial Malzeno will enter a "Bloodening" state similar to a regular Malzeno, where its scales will become duller, clusters of Qurio will gather on its arms and chest, and Qurio energy appears between the prongs of its tail. Further corrosion by the Qurio will cause this to develop into an advanced "Bloodrage" state, indicated by Malzeno's silver armor becoming greatly blackened and its wing membranes being tainted magenta. If Malzeno is injured enough, it can immediately enter the Bloodrage state without entering the Bloodening first.

When severely injured, Qurio will swarm Primordial Malzeno and seemingly burn it, causing it to enter the "Bloodlust" state. In this form, its scales and armor turn completely black, and its wing membranes, mouth, head crest, and gaps between its scales start to glow brightly with fiery orange light, similar to the Risen Elder Dragons in their Risen states.

Abilities[]

Primordial Malzeno is the original form of Malzeno before developing its symbiosis with the Qurio, and boasts considerably superior physical strength and agility, as well as durability granted by its armor. Compared to the original variant, it fights more akin to a knight, preferring to use its physical strength in a more flexible and effective way by wielding its armored wings for both offense and defense alongside its tail. Despite its sheer strength, it is extremely precise to the point where it can stab individual Qurio out of the air with its wings. Even with just its physical prowess, Primordial Malzeno can overpower or repel other powerful monsters such as Scorned Magnamalo, Velkhana, and Gaismagorm.

Unlike Malzeno, Primordial Malzeno will refuse to use any Qurio to aid it and will kill any that come near. However if distracted, the Qurio will attempt to bond with Primordial Malzeno and force it to enter the Bloodening state. Despite the symbiosis being forced, Primordial Malzeno's superior physicality allows it to wield the Qurio's power far more effectively, with it using their energy for powerful and violent new attacks. As the infestation progresses, this develops into the Bloodrage state, where Primordial Malzeno becomes significantly more aggressive, its attacks become more devastating, and its speed increases to the point of using the normal variant's "teleportation" multiple times in succession. However, like a normal Malzeno, the Qurio-covered parts on its body become weaker in these states, and dealing enough damage to them will end the state and topple Primordial Malzeno.

If Primordial Malzeno is on the verge of death, the Qurio will swarm it further and seemingly overload it with energy, transforming it into the Bloodlust state. In this form, Primordial Malzeno's aggression, speed, and strength are increased dramatically, and it becomes capable of attacking and teleporting nearly continously without stopping. Unlike its previous two states, the Bloodlust state will not end until Primordial Malzeno is slain or successfully manages to purge the Qurio, but its struggle against the symbiosis will also cause it to become fatigued more frequently.

Behavior[]

Unlike Malzeno and most Elder Dragons, Primordial Malzeno is a rather peaceful Elder willing to coexist with humans, to the point where it was once revered as a protector of the Kingdom who would judge evildoers. It is fairly intelligent by extension, as shown by its skillful usage of its limbs and its ability to seemingly understand emotions such as gratitude or hatred. However, it can still be intensely territorial, and once sufficiently provoked, Primordial Malzeno will not hesitate to retaliate with extreme ferocity and destructive ability, such as in its violent battle with Gaismagorm and the Qurio. Even so, its fighting style is considered to be elegant and knight-like, but will become increasingly brutal and underhanded as the Qurio continue to influence it.

Primordial Malzeno is bitter enemies with Gaismagorm and the Qurio for invading its territory, and both hunts down Qurio and resists their control. Even when infested by them, it will continously attempt to resist the symbiosis, making it look like it's constantly struggling. The reason is due to seeing it as a plague aganist its own kind.

In-Game Description[]

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
Malzeno's original form before it was tainted by the Qurio. Ordinarily, it uses its wings and tail with the elegance of a knight, but under the Qurio's influence, it uses underhanded means of cornering its prey, and in its "Bloodlust" state it wields tremendous power. Because of the explosive energy corrupting its body, it sometimes shows behavior as if its struggling against an overwhelming force.
Threat Level (危険度): ★★★★★★★★★★

Hunting Tips[]

Once overwhelmed by the Qurio, it transitions into its Bloodening state, which culminates in Bloodrage as it is corrupted. Dealing damage is the only way to mitigate this state. When this Malzeno gets low on health, it enters its Bloodlust state. Attacks won't calm it down in this state, so extreme caution is advised.

Notes[]

General Notes

  • Primordial Malzeno is the final new monster to be introduced in Sunbreak, and as such is also the final monster to be introduced in the Fifth Generation.
  • Primordial Malzeno's Japanese name roughly translates to "Malzeno, One who Engraves the Primordial".
  • Primordial Malzeno can be considered the final boss of both Elgado Outpost's story (and Sunbreak's post-game, if fought in order by update monsters' release date).
  • Primordial Malzeno is the third Variant in the series to be introduced in the same game as its standard version, preceded by Rusted Kushala Daora in Monster Hunter 2 and Narwa the Allmother in Monster Hunter Rise.
  • Primordial Malzeno uses its wings and tail together in fencing/sword attacks, reminiscent of both the Sword and Shield and the Lance.
  • Primodial Malzeno is similar to Red Khezu as both of them are considered to be their true original selves. Their "normal" counterparts are monsters that have been altered.
  • Primordial Malzeno was voted 13th place in the Hunters' Choice for Top Monster during Monster Hunter's 20th Anniversary.[1]

Monster Hunter Rise

  • Primordial Malzeno was added to Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak in the Bonus Update on June 8, 2023.
  • Primordial Malzeno is unlocked at MR 10, alongside Amatsu, Chaotic Gore Magala, Flaming Espinas, Gold Rathian, Seething Bazelgeuse, Silver Rathalos, Velkhana, Violet Mizutsune, and Anomaly Quests.
    • Primordial Malzeno's Urgent Quest becomes unlocked after defeating Amatsu. The player must speak to Admiral Galleus to accept the quest.
    • Despite being unlocked at MR 10, it is not recommended to attempt it until obtaining equipment from other Title Update/postgame monsters, Anomaly Investigations, or Risen Elder Dragons, due to its significantly higher difficulty. To indicate this, its quest reward is almost 3 times that of the Amatsu serving as its prerequisite and puts it at an estimated "intended" level of MR 200, higher than Risen Shagaru Magala. It's considered to be the strongest monster in the game.
  • In the Urgent Follower Quest to slay it, "Harbinger of Destruction", it will be the only large monster in the Citadel, and the hunter(s) and Fiorayne will only be able to repel it, upon which it will retreat to Zone 14. Afterwards, a cutscene will play where they help it repel the Qurio swarm attacking it, upon which it will leave in peace. Players will still get normal rewards as if they had slain it.
    • Gathering of the Qurio plays as background music for the Quest when not fighting or searching for Primordial Malzeno.
    • In this quest, Primordial Malzeno will always be scripted to go to Zone 2 when low on health, and will transform into the Bloodlust stage shortly after. It will not change zones for the remainder of the fight.
    • In any other quest besides "Harbinger of Destruction", Primordial Malzeno can be slain normally and can appear with other monsters. It features the same Turf Wars as a normal Malzeno, with the exception of Velkhana with which has a different Turf War.
  • Primordial Malzeno has two pin attacks depending on whether or not it's in its Bloodening stage or further. If it's in its regular state, then it will seemingly observe the hunter before releasing them, dealing relatively minor damage. If it is currently infested, it will drain their life force similar to a regular Malzeno.
  • In the Bloodlust state, Primordial Malzeno will become immune to many disabling effects. This includes Puppet/Marionnette Spiders, Flash Bombs, Ironsilk, and more.
  • Primordial Malzeno in its normal state is poor at anti-air attacks. However in their Bloodening state or further, they utilize 2 different Qurio cloud attacks to knock foes out of the sky.
  • When Primordial Malzeno is slain, the Qurio die with the Elder Dragon instead. This is a huge contrast to the Qurio who flee when the normal Malzeno, Gaismagorm, and Afflicted Monsters are slain.
  • When completing Harbinger of Destruction for the first time and watching its end cutscene, Primordial Malzeno in the cutscene will have parts reflecting any parts broken/unbroken during the quest.
  • Each part of Primordial Malzeno's armor set requires a rare drop corresponding to a monster added in one of the Title Updates: Lucent Nargacuga, Flaming Espinas, Chaotic Gore Magala, and Velkhana. The exception is the arm piece, which requires Primordial Malzeno's own Mantle instead of that of Amatsu.
