Pukei-Pukei is a Bird Wyvern first introduced in Monster Hunter: World.
Appearance
Pukei-Pukei slightly resembles a chameleon, with a limited color-shifting capability, and its eyes are similar to frogs. It has a pair of wings and is covered in green, feather-like scales that vary in color throughout its body, excluding its underbelly, which is covered in white osteoderm-like platings. Pukei-Pukei also features vibrant feathers around its neck and wings.
Abilities
Pukei-Pukei is known to store the properties of its food within its mouth and tail before combining them with its own poison. By doing so, it can spew poison from its mouth and tail for protection with various effects depending on its previous meal. For example, if Pukei-Pukei eats a Scatternut, then its poison will gain a stunning ability. Hunters can drop Scatternuts on Pukei-Pukei in order to prevent it from feeding on nuts.[1]
Behavior
Observational reports state that Pukei-Pukei will bully weaker monsters but cower before bigger, stronger monsters. It's prone to retreating at the first sign of danger, so use that to your advantage. When enraged, the head and wing feathers of the Pukei-Pukei will turn red. When fatigued, the color of feathers on its head and wings fades, its eyes also narrows.

- MHW's Hunter's Notes |
“ | The regurgitation of a Pukei-Pukei varies depending on what it has eaten: it may spread wider, linger on the ground, or even stun prey more easily. Check, therefore, that the monster's mouth and tail aren't swollen prior to engaging. | „ | |

Notes
General Notes
- Pukei-Pukei was based on flowers and one of its design concepts was of an accordion.[2]
- Pukei-Pukei shares a similar wing shape, pattern, and chameleon-like feet with Paolumu, despite one being a Bird Wyvern and the other being a Flying Wyvern.
- Pukei-Pukei was voted 64th place in the Hunters' Choice for Top Monster during Monster Hunter's 20th Anniversary.[3]
- Pukei-Pukei’s name sounds like a reduplication of the English slang word “puke”, possibly referencing its habit of spitting up poisonous “vomit”.
Monster Hunter: World
- If the Pukei-Pukei survives the quest until the end, it and a Grimalkyne will award the player with an Attack Jewel.
Monster Hunter Rise
- The severed tail will have very short range for this attack, but can still hit and poison their foe.
- Pukei-Pukei gains a new attack where it runs flailing around while firing poisonous gas out of its mouth, similar to Yian Kut-Ku.
- Pukei-Pukei gains a new attack where it spews a beam of poisonous gas out of its mouth.
