Risen Elder Dragons (Japanese: 傀異克服古龍 Kai'ikokufukukoryū), also known as Risen Monsters, are a type of monster introduced in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak's second title update. They are a group of Elder Dragons that survived and overcame the dreaded Anomaly plague inflicted on to them, consuming the Qurio instead to become an entirely new species.
Overview[]
Similar to the Afflicted Monsters, they are monsters that have been infected by the evolving Qurio, with even Elder Dragons that use the Frenzy Virus being vulnerable to it. However, instead of quickly dying as all infected monsters were initially believed to, they have overcome the Affliction through their abilities and willpower, consuming and killing the Qurio Swarm. Qurio body fluid mixes with that of the Elder Dragon and allows them to wield some of their explosive power, changing their appearance and giving birth to a Risen Elder Dragon. Because of this, Risen Elder Dragons are considered a huge threat to the ecosystem, and hunter(s) are called upon to hunt them immediately. Risen Elder Dragons first started showing up after the deaths of Malzeno and Gaismagorm and the subsequent first outbreak of Afflicted Monsters as the Qurio attempted to find new hosts.
Bahari was the one who coined the name, refering to how the Elder Dragons have figuratively risen from the dead. As the name implies, the only monsters that can overcome the Affliction and become Risen are exclusively Elder Dragons. There are five known Risen Elder Dragons: Risen Chameleos, Risen Kushala Daora, Risen Teostra, Risen Crimson Glow Valstrax, and Risen Shagaru Magala. Risen Shagaru Magala is a notable case, as its affinity with the Frenzy Virus gives it immunity to the Qurio Virus; in fact, the dragon is capable of easily seizing control of the Qurios' energy to become even more powerful, making it among the most dangerous of the Risen Elders.
Although Risen Elder Dragons do not drop any different materials compared to their normal counterparts, successfully completing a quest with them as the target will award the monster's respective Risegems, special materials used to craft their unique armor sets as well as Decorations.
Appearance[]
Risen Elder Dragons resemble their normal counterparts, but feature greatly darkened, purplish scales that look as if burned, along with with many large, pale, scar-like patterns all over their body, mostly on the horns, wing edges, and tail. Upon entering the Risen State, these white patches glow golden-orange. The roars of Risen Elder Dragons also have a notable metallic distortion compared to the original.
Behavior[]
Risen Elder Dragons mostly follow the same behavior as the original variants, but as a result of surviving the Qurios' infection and seemingly taken their energy for themselves, they are considerably more ferocious than usual, which is only excaberated in the Risen State. Because of their extreme power and increased aggression, as well as their abnormal nature, they are considered both extremely dangerous threats and valuable research material, necessitating their immediate slaying.
Abilities[]
As a whole, wielding the Qurio's overflowing energy for themselves grants Risen Elder Dragons considerably heightened physical strength, speed, and durability than the normal variant. Their preexisting abilities will usually be enhanced, and they will gain entirely new abilities and attacks.
When sufficiently angered, Risen Elder Dragons can enter a new state called the Risen state (Japanese: 傀氣脈動状態 Kai'kimyakudōjōtai), upon which they will unleash a golden-black explosion before transforming. Each Risen Elder Dragon has a unique Risen state, but a commonality among all of them is significantly increased aggression, damage, and multiple fearsome new abilities. Like with the Afflicted Monsters, dealing enough damage will knock the monster out of the Risen state, instantly toppling them. Risen Elder Dragons will enter their Risen state more often as they near death.

Notes[]
- Despite their connection to the Afflicted Monsters, Risen Elder Dragon quests are not found in the Anomaly Research tab, but the Master Rank 6★ Quests tab instead.
- Risen Chameleos, Kushala Daora, and Teostra were added as 8★ Anomaly Investigation and Anomaly Research targets alongside Afflicted Chaotic Gore Magala in Title Update 4 on February 7, 2023.
- Risen Crimson Glow Valstrax and Shagaru Magala were added as 9★ targets in Title Update 5 on April 20th, 2023.
- Risen Elder Dragons found in 8★ and 9★ Anomaly Research Quests have increased stats and altered move sets compared to the ones found in Master Rank 6★, denoted by having special icons with a flaming golden aura around them. These "Hazard/EX" Risen Elder Dragons can also be found in high level Anomaly Investigations, the 8★ ones at AR 251+ and 9★ ones at AR 271+.
- Unlike Afflicted Monsters, there are no signs of live Qurio around the Risen Elder Dragons at all, and none of their attacks inflict Bloodblight.
- Risen Elder Dragons can do Turf Wars just like their normal counterparts if they have one to begin with, albeit with a seemingly higher tendency to win them.
Trivia[]
- Risen Elder Dragons are similar to the Apex State Monsters from Frenzy Virus, as both have overcome what they are being affected by and transformed into a more powerful state.
- However, unlike the MH4U Apex, Risen Elder Dragons are considered a separate monster and have several new moves that make them significantly different from the base monster they're derived from.
- In turn, this also makes them similar to Apex Monsters (MHRise), since both states are caused by two different Elder Dragons, and both are present in the same game.
- However, Risen Elder Dragons are not immune to Ironsilk and Wyvern Riding like Apex Monsters (save for specific circumstances).
- Risen Elder Dragons also share similarities with the Arch-Tempered Monsters, given only Elder Dragons can be in these exclusive States. However, they have more distinct changes compared to their base variants, such as different appearances, moves, and their Risen states.
- Their Risegems are also similar to the Arch-Tempered Tickets used for Gamma armor sets.
- Risen Elder Dragons, specifically, the Risen Chameleos, was first added in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak's Second Title Update on September 29th, 2022.
- Two additional Risen Elder Dragons were added in the Third Title Update on November 24th, 2022
- Another Risen Elder Dragon was added in the Fourth Title Update on February 7th, 2023.
- One more Risen Elder Dragon was added in the Fifth Title Update on April 20th, 2023.
- Before their official reveal on September 15th of 2022, Risen Elder Dragons were referred to as Powered-up monsters on the road map.
- All Risen Elder Dragons are based on the base form of an Elder Dragon, with Risen Crimson Glow Valstrax being the only exception.
- The only Elder Dragons to not receive Risen counterparts are: Wind Serpent Ibushi, Thunder Serpent Narwa/Narwa the Allmother, Malzeno/Primordial Malzeno, Gaismagorm, Velkhana, and Amatsu.
- Out of all of them, Velkhana is the only Elder Dragon to not be considered a major story/"final" boss.
- Malzeno and Gaismagorm can be considered to already be in a psuedo-Risen state due to being symbiotic hosts for the Qurio.
- Although Primordial Malzeno's Bloodlust state is visually and thematically similar to a Risen state, it is not considered to be one.
