Safi'jiiva is an Elder Dragon first introduced in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne.

Physiology[]

Safi'jiiva is a large red dragon that in contrast to its juvenile form, Xeno'jiiva, no longer has an otherworldly appearance. Its scales are now rigid, very resistant to damage unless tenderized, and red in colour with some dark accents on many parts, such as the horns, feet, spikes, and wing edges. Its wing webbing and underside, however, is a tan colour. Its body parts no longer glow except when absorbing energy or when in its "Supercritical" state. Many spikes run from its neck along its back to the tail tip.

Safi'jiiva keeps its arms bent and its chest close to the ground, unlike its juvenile form, which keeps its arms outstretched and its chest high off the ground. This can give the impression that Safi'jiiva is smaller than its younger counterpart despite them being almost identical in size, with the former being slightly longer.

Abilities[]

As the adult form of Xeno'jiiva, Safi'jiiva inherits its juvenile form's control of bioenergy and takes it to new heights by being able to freely draw bioenergy from its surroundings, lure monsters similar to how Xeno'jiiva lures Elder Dragons, and even manipulate ambient bioenergy on an ecosystem-wide scale. It uses this ability to reshape and destroy entire biomes and ecosystems in order to suit its needs, giving it a reputation as a "perfect being" by some.

When engaged in combat, Safi'jiiva uses high-power energy attacks similar to Xeno'jiiva, but with greatly increased power and mastery. It can wield explosive blasts, focused lasers that saturate the ground with explosive energy, sweeping beams that can cover a wide area, and more. Due to its enormous size and weight coupled with its highly developed musculature, Safi'jiiva will also physically attack with every part of its body, and can augment its blows with bioenergy to create violent delayed eruptions.

Its scales and hide are noted to be unnaturally durable, even for an Elder Dragon; unlike most monsters which have weak spots, its entire body will easily deflect attacks unless softened up beforehand. More impressively, when injured, Safi'jiiva can absorb the bioenergy of its environment to power itself up and accelerate its natural healing ability, allowing it to almost instantly recover from wounds and re-harden body parts that have been tenderized. However, severe damage can "knock out" its absorbed energy and force it to replenish it faster, and if Safi'jiiva completely drains an area of bioenergy, it will be forced to search for more in another location.

If sufficiently angered, Safi'jiiva can unleash an "ultimate attack" similar to Behemoth's Ecliptic Meteor, called "Sapphire of the Emperor", in which it takes flight and hovers while breathing its flame onto the ground, sending the flame waves outward and scorching the ground. After some time has passed, it then releases a blue star-like ball of concentrated energy that violently detonates into a massive explosion of light that covers the whole area. It is said to be a tremendously powerful blast able to instantly kill any and all creatures caught within its range, but the amount of energy required to use it means that Safi'jiiva will use it relatively sparingly unless it feels that it is about to die. Hunters can survive the Sapphire of the Emperor by taking cover behind rock crags formed by Safi'jiiva's attacks,

When pushed to its limits, Safi'jiiva can enter "Supercritical State". During this state, the constellation-like pattern that appears when it is absorbing energy now appears on its wing webbing and its underside glows white in the seams between the scales. It becomes much more aggressive and powerful during this state, but its hide softens, allowing weapons to damage it normally without having to soften its body parts with Clutch Claw attacks. Its chest becomes a major weak point during this state.

Behavior[]

Safi'jiiva is instantly violent and vicious towards any who approach it, attacking mercilessly with even more aggression than its younger form, but is notably more calculating and intelligent with its attacks. It drains the energy from the land around it to ensure its survival and prosperity without any care for its surroundings, presumably destroying any life nearby after prolonged exposure and making it an extreme threat. Its intelligence is said to be exceptional, even for Elder Dragon standards.

It prefers to engage hunters from a distance with beam attacks rather than with melee strikes, and is intelligent enough to lead their movement with certain attacks. Unlike Xeno'jiiva, which attacks indiscriminately, Safi'jiiva will often single out the greatest threat to itself and focus its full strength on them.

Equipment[]

For more information, see Safi'jiiva Equipment.

Safi'jiiva materials can be used to craft two different armor sets: Safi'jiiva α+ Armor and Safi'jiiva β+ Armor.

Completing the Safi'jiiva siege rewards unique Awakened weapons. Unlike the Relic Weapons of Monster Hunter 4 and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, and Kulve Taroth's siege, they have preset stats and names and have equal stats on the same weapon type, with the only difference being the element/status effect each weapon carries. These can then be enhanced with special Awakened Materials dropped during the siege, which enables them to benefit from up to five Awakened Abilities at a time. Awakened Abilities confer a variety of bonus effects, including Armor Set Skills and boosts to multiple stats.

There are too many to list here, so see the equipment page for a complete list.

Notes[]

General Notes

  • Safi'jiiva gets its name from safi (صافي), the Arabic word for "Pure", and jiva which according to Hinduism, is a living being or any kind of entity imbued with a life force.
    • In the Wyverian language, Safi'jiiva's name means "Perfect Life".[1]
  • Safi'jiiva is designed as the equal/counterpart/rival of Fatalis. They wanted to make another Siege fight where you could cooperate with other players, and came up with the idea of depleting energy levels. In terms of design, they wanted to make an equal of Fatalis, while also giving the surprise that "this is what Xeno'jiiva will look like as an adult!". When they design monsters that look really strong, they tend to end up black-colored, so they made Safi'jiiva red instead to change things up. They wanted it to look like a simple dragon rather than a very original creature design.
  • Safi-jiiva was voted 16th place in the Hunters' Choice for Top Monster during Monster Hunter's 20th Anniversary.[2]
  • The theme; For the Emperor's Amusement of Safi'jiiva was voted among the top 10 music themes in the Hunters' Choice: Top 10 Monster Themes - Monster Hunter 20th Anniversary[3]

Monster Hunter: World

  • Certain features of Xeno'jiiva can be seen by breaking Safi'jiiva's parts.
    • For example, the sockets that housed its six sensory organs can be seen by breaking Safi'jiiva's head.
  • Unlike its younger counterpart's, Safi'jiiva's ground eruptions do not cause Dragonblight.
    • This could have to do with the Secluded Valley's environment being poor in bioenergy compared to the Confluence of Fates.
  • Safi'jiiva is very vulnerable to Poison, much like its younger counterpart.
  • Safi'jiiva must be slain to complete its siege event. If a hunting party fails to slay it within 20 minutes, it will retreat and the energy it had depleted from each level of the Secluded Valley will be recorded at the Gathering Hub. Depleted energy, rather than damage to the monster, is reflected in future attempts for all members of an Online Session, up until a party successfully slays Safi'jiiva. Its carcass yields 6 carves and its tail can be severed, yielding 2 carves.
  • Its forelegs, hindlegs, wings, chest, and back can be broken. The head can be broken twice, and its tail can be severed. The chest will only take partbreak damage when Safi'jiiva is Supercritical.
  • Safi'jiiva's parts only require one Clutch Claw attack to soften regardless of the weapon type used.
  • Fixed damage, such as Gunlance's Shelling and Barrel Bombs, is reduced by 30% on Safi'jiiva's unbroken parts.
  • Unlike Xeno'jiiva, Safi'jiiva can be mounted, though this will immediately trigger a toppled state.
  • When Safi'jiiva is absorbing energy from the ground, many glowing constellation-like patterns appear on its wing webbing.
  • When Safi'jiiva is staggered and trapped in decayed ground or hit by falling boulders at the first layer, or when it is successfully afflicted by Elderseal, bio-energy will visibly leak out from its body, appearing as a bluish flame-like aura that shortly dissipates.
  • At the bottom layer, after every ultimate attack, three gas traps appear at the outer edges of the area. The gas explodes when triggered by a player attack; catching Safi'jiiva in the explosion will deal 1,000 damage and deplete a portion of its energy.
  • Occasionally, Safi'jiiva will do its ultimate attack twice in a row, spawning no crags for cover and resulting in a team wipe.
    • According to CAPCOM, this is intentional behavior. A prospective hunting party should avoid interrupting attacks which would create new crags such as its Nova Press to maximize their chances of surviving successive ultimate attacks.
  • Normally, Safi'jiiva will exit its Supercritical state upon using its "Sapphire of the Emperor" attack. However, successfully interrupting this attack during its startup with a stagger, an incapacitating ailment, or an unresisted Flash Pod will cancel it, keeping the monster Supercritical. When near-death, Safi'jiiva will remain in its Supercritical state permanently, even after using its ultimate attack.
  • Safi'jiiva was given single- and two-player stat scaling in the 15.10 update.
