They sport color schemes of grey, white and red and are typically larger than normal individuals.
Abilities
Its thunder-like attacks are different in coloring from the ordinary Zinogre; this crimson red/black lightning deals Dragon-Element damage. It is able to imbue its attacks with Dragon Element due to its absorption of multiple bugs that feed on Dragonfell berries.
These bugs are red colored orbs that float around Stygian Zinogre; they closely resemble the Great Thunderbug from previous games. When released, these orbs can fly directly at the Hunter and explode on contact, dealing significant damage.
Behavior
Due to living in both the Tundra and Volcano where food is not always plentiful Stygian Zinogre have to be highly aggressive to other predators for food and territory.
The prefix Stygian is derived from the River Styx, a river in the Greek mythological underworld which carries dead souls to their fate. This is is meant to give the monster a dark and hellish feel compared to the original Zinogre.
A subspecies of Zinogre with a jet-black body. It gathers bugs that eat Dragonfell Berries and uses their Dragon Element energy to dramatically boost its power. Perhaps this is why it can survive in extreme heat or frigid cold.

General Notes
Instead of it releasing thunder balls from spinning, Stygian Zinogre releases one to four red dragon orbs. These orbs home in on hunters, but only in a straight line. If they hit, they inflict Dragonblight on the Hunter. It can only release four orbs when fully charged.
One way to avoid the homing thunder bug attack is to get behind Stygian Zinogre as soon as it sends them out, the thunder bugs will zoom towards player but will crash into Stygian Zinogre, causing small damage.
Like the normal Zinogre, when the Stygian Zinogre is tripped, bugs can be harvested from its back. This will yield Dracophage Bugs instead of Fulgurbugs.
Stygian Zinogre can finish charging by releasing red thunder while walking.
To recover Stamina, Stygian Zinogre will prey on a Popo, Slagtoth or Rhenoplos (depending on where it's fought). It may also eat from a carcass.
Stygian Zinogre can also perform a combo in order to get out of this state. First it will try to charge normally, but just before going into a full charge state, it will try to pin a hunter. If it succeeds, as soon as it lands the first bite it will howl and become enraged.
When weak, the Stygian Zinogre will break into the Secret Areas of the Tundra to sleep, much like the Deviljho and Jade Barroth.
Stygian Zingore's roar requires Earplugs to block.
In an interview, Monster Hunter Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto stated that Stygian Zinogre was one of his favorite monsters, due in part to its color scheme and the fact that Zinogre is "already a cool-looking monster."
Unlike its Thunder-element counterpart, the Stygian Zinogre is susceptible to shock traps, unable to use them to charge its own Dragon-element lightning.
It is susceptible to flash bombs, especially when charging. This prevents the full charge just as the normal Zinogre. However, during its second charge, it may be able to complete the charging even after it becomes blinded.
Because Stygian Zinogre is able to consistently inflict Dragonblight, it is advisable to use a raw damage weapon if the hunter does not have Blight Resist or a significant Dragon resistance. Dragonblight temporarily eliminates a weapon's elemental/status damage, and a raw damage weapon can subvert this problem.
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
During charging state, Stygian Zinogre can still defend itself with its bolts of dragon thunder around it.
Often while walking, its body lights up with a red glow, and it will release red thunder from its body. Spots on the floor will light up, indicating where the thunder will strike.
Often when charging up, it will release more red thunder around itself.
It only needs one charge to become enraged.
It can combo its two punch attack with the body slam attack.
Although uncommon, Stygian Zinogre can roar when not enraged.
When it's charging, it will raise its head up, making it harder to stop.
There is an event quest where you fight the Stygian Zinogre at the Volcano.
The event Stygian Zinogre is larger than any Stygian Zinogre and far more powerful. It is also one of the only quests that allows you to fight a Stygian Zinogre at the Volcano.
The word "Stygian" stems from the Styx, a large river in Hades in ancient Greek mythology. This is an allusion to the fiery, hellish nature of this species of the Zinogre.
The lightning that surrounds it while charging seems to be more predictable now.
In G-rank, it will release Dracophage orbs whenever it does certain attacks, such as the tail slam or the hipcheck. The number of orbs released depends on whether it's charged or not.
Stygian Zinogre is capable of doing a charged forelimb slam, even when it's not charged up at all. When fully charged it can do this three times in a row.
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
Stygian Zinogre was permanently added to Monster Hunter World: Iceborne on December 5, 2019.
It's Dracophage bugs now behave differently. Instead of homing in on the Hunter, they briefly move forward before summoning a lightning strike where they stop.
It has gained multiple new moves, such as a spinning slash, summoning four waves of dragon bolts in a forward pattern, and Zinogre's new double flip slam followed by a forward corkscrew.
Tempered Stygian Zinogre is a Tier 3 monster, putting it on par with Elder Dragons.
When tempered, it always starts out fully charged.
Monster Hunter Frontier
Unlike the normal Zinogre, Stygian Zinogre's charged form appears differently in Frontier. Its body gets noticeably darker, parts of its fur and scales stand up in different larger patterns, their claws on all of their legs turn red, and parts of their fur and even their horns turn a deep gray almost black.
Monster Hunter Explore
Due to the absence of the Dragon Element in Explore, all of Stygian Zinogre's attacks that typically inflict Dragonblight will instead inflict Paralysis.
