Teostra is an Elder Dragon introduced in Monster Hunter 2.

Teostra is a dragon with leonine features and a fiery coloration. It has a grand mane, large fangs, and a pair of horns that curve backward. Its wings are covered in fur, and its tail ends in a clump of such fur. It is the male counterpart to Lunastra.

Teostra has some basic physical attacks such as charges, bites, tail swipes, claw swipes and dive bombs. But the real danger comes from two things. Teostra is capable of breathing out large flamethrower-like streams of fire, and generating an aura of flame around itself which will burn away at those who get too close. Alongside this Teostra possess mass quantities of explosive powder made from its own scales, with just a gnash of its teeth it can create sparks and trigger explosions in mass, it can even cover itself in the powder to help spread it more easily, or ignite it all at once for a massive explosive fittingly known as the Supernova. Teostra can inflict Fireblight due to covering itself in flames. It can also heat up patches of ground when enraged so that walking on this ground will inflict Fireblight.

Teostra is a very aggressive monster. It will show dominance to anything that it encounters. Unlike Lunastra, who normally gives warnings to get out of its territory, Teostra will ruthlessly attack intruders until they are dead, even chasing them out of its normal territory. Although older specimens of Teostra have been observed being notably calmer, it still will only tolerate the presence of intruders in its territory for so long. Teostra is known to cooperate with Lunastra if she is present in the same map, even sharing an interaction known as "Bonding" with each other.

This monster is most often found in hot areas such as the Desert and the Volcano, but has been known to venture into the Swamp and the Town. Teostra has also made it's home in the fiery reaches of the Elder's Recess.

Hardcore (HC) Teostra

FrontierGen-HC Teostra Render 001 (Edited).png

In MHFO Season 9.0, Hardcore Teostra is introduced. His flamethrower attack has a much longer range, even when not enraged. He might cover random parts of the area he's in with explosive powder and make them explode with a snap of its teeth at any time. He will also let out a high-grade roar right after the detonations. Explosions are added to his claw attacks. He can also jump erratically all over the place, causing fire bursts with his tail every time he lands. When he roars, enters rage mode, or activates his fire aura, he'll be surrounded by a flaming tornado. He will enter air mode much more often. While airborne, he can provoke explosions with his tail attacks or breath fire. Flash Bombing Teostra will cause explosions around him instantly.

General Notes

  • Using Immunizer doubles the speed of the red healing bar, healing players when Teostra's red aura saps the player's health gradually.
  • Teostra can produce a highly flammable powder and use its wings to spread it across the air. It then gnashes its teeth to create a spark, which then causes the powder around it to ignite and explode. The spark emitted has two colors, indicating the distance of the explosion. Red sparks indicate a close ring of explosions, while yellow sparks indicate a long range explosion.
    • Alternatively, the speed of the wing beat also indicates the range of the explosion : a fast wing beat will lead to a close range explosion around the body of Teostra, whereas a slow wing beat will lead to the long range explosion.
  • Teostra and Lunastra can drop a shiny when roaring.
  • Teostra's roar requires Earplugs to block.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite

  • The Fire Aura around Teostra causes Terrain damage and deflects all kinds of arrows and some kinds of bullets. For range weapons, any kind of arrows and normal bullets cannot penetrate Teostra's aura. Only elemental bullets, pierce bullets, explosive shells, paint shells, status-inflicting shells and thrown objects can. This also applies to Lunastra's aura and Kushala Daora's wind barrier.
    • Teostra is unable to produce this aura if one of his horns are broken. However, the following conditions must be met before its horns can be broken: the horns must take at least 1 point of damage from Dragon Element, they must take a certain amount of ordinary damage, and Teostra's current HP must be below 60% of its maximum HP.
    • The Aura can also be temporarily disabled by attacking his face for a short time and flinching his head, poisoning, paralyzing, or knocking out.
  • Rarely, Teostra will escape from the Hunter and sleep to recover health. During this time, the horns may grow back.
  • Teostra's tail can be cut once it has received enough damage and only when Teostra's HP is below 40%.
  • When enraged, his Flamethrower attack almost triples in length, thus having a much larger range.
  • Teostra have 2 new abilities. They can summon a small area of fire powder where the hunter is standing, and can imbue their claws with fire when enraged.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

  • Dragon element is no longer required to break his horns.
  • Teostra's flame aura now envelopes only his head.
    • In Guild Quests with a level of 126 or higher, the flame aura envelopes his whole body.
  • Teostra's flame aura is only active when he's not enraged.
    • While the flame aura is active, Teostra's flamethrower attack has a larger range and a longer duration.
    • When activating the flame aura, or while the flame aura is active, after performing a roar Teostra will create dragon wind.
    • The flame aura can be canceled by flinching or poisoning Teostra.
  • Whenever Teostra becomes enraged, the area glows red as if it were about to explode.
    • Teostra's rage can be canceled by mounting and toppling him, dealing enough damage to his head, cutting his tail, stunning him or putting him to sleep.
    • Teostra uses Blast attacks only when enraged and it can release explosive powder with claw swipes and tail whips.
    • 100 seconds after becoming enraged, Teostra flies up and unleashes a massive explosion from his body, dealing heavy Fire damage and inflicting Stun to nearby hunters, while ending his rage. This attack can be prevented by canceling his rage mode early.
  • In G Rank it gains new attacks when it is enraged:
    • It can release the explosive powder with the back hop.
    • It can detonate the explosive powder after it performs claw swipes or a back hop.
    • It can do a ranged massive explosion at the hunter.

Monster Hunter: World

  • Teostra does not attack hunters on sight (unless the hunter wears the Assassin's Mantle), and will only get aggravated if they purposely provoke him. Teostra will get aggressive regardless when provoked by other large monsters or when seeing an aggravated Lunastra.
  • Teostra's supernova is no longer guaranteed to inflict stun and has a longer casting time.
  • Teostra's combat revolves around the dragon advancing one of two modes throughout 2 stages, after which Teostra will execute a Supernova and reset his battle stance. The progress of this cycle can be sabotaged by staggering or toppling the dragon.
    • Fire Mode coats Teostra in fiery aura. It tremendously enhances Teostra’s fire elemental attacks and adds fire element to some of his basic moves. In this mode, Teostra passively inflicts constant fire damage around his body.
    • Blast Mode covers Teostra in clusters of his scales. This mode grants Teostra advanced techniques on his explosive scale ability and modifies his breath attack. Teostra also leaves stray cluster of explosive dust as he moves around in this mode.
  • The constant damaging aura Teostra emits while in Fire Mode cannot be neutralized with Cool Drink.
  • Teostra will not target Lunastra and vice versa; both monsters will cooperate against common enemies, be it hunters or other monsters.
    • When both are enraged and are in the same area, they can do a unique "Bond" interaction in which both dragons do their supernovas simultaneously.
    • Peculiarly, sometimes when the two are using a bonding attack, both dragons can "swap places", with Teostra initiating Lunastra's Hellflare and Lunastra initiating Teostra's Supernova instead.
  • Teostra's roar requires Earplugs Lv5 to block.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne

  • In Master Rank Teostra can switch his battle mode as it advances to the next level.
  • When in Blast Mode, Master Rank Teostra can create clouds of supercharged explosive dust among clusters of regular ones. These dust clusters glow a bright blue, emit larger and more powerful blasts and upswing hunters in their blast zone.
    • Tempered versions of Master Rank Teostra can use these supercharged dusts outside of Blast Mode while having them used more evenly or even dominantly in proportion to normal scale dust while the mode is active.
  • Master Rank Teostra gains several new moves utilizing fire breath or scale dusts that focus on deterring close-range attackers and might delay priming the explosive dust he casts, letting them linger on the battlefield and detonate them amidst a physical attack.

Monster Hunter Rise

  • Teostra was added in Rise's first title update.
  • Hunters first hunt Teostra at Hunter Rank 40.

Monster Hunter Frontier

  • HC and Supremacy's Teostra's roar requires HG Earplugs to block.
