“ | An amphibian easily recognized by its gigantic, rotund body. It is extremely gluttonous and swallows everything that moves whole, gravel and all. Once it's done eating, its stomach swells and it becomes slower, but its attacks also become heavier and much more destructive. | „
Tetranadon is an Amphibian first introduced in Monster Hunter Rise.
Physiology
Tetranadon is an Amphibian with an inflatable belly and a turtle-like shell on its back. Its belly is capable of inflating to the point of doubling their original body size. It also has algae-like fur on its head, front legs, shell, and tail. It has a toothless, platypus-like beak and webbed feet. Its eyes are orange and have the horizontal pupil common to amphibians. It also has a crest on their head that looks very similar to the head dish of the mythological Kappa. When its belly is not inflated, it walks on all fours; once enough debris is swallowed, however, its belly inflates to an incredible size, and it starts standing on its hindlegs.
Behavior and Abilities
Tetranadon are known to clash with Arzuros. Tetranadon in their inflated state have been seen trying to swallow an Arzuros during this battle, however the stocky Fanged Beasts are too difficult for the greedy Amphibians to consume. Other Fanged Beasts it can defeat easily are Lagombi and Volvidon. However, it must content with other dangerous predators that can harm it such as Anjanath, Goss Harag, and the feared Seething Bazelgeuse.
Tetranadon are known to swallow large amounts of gravel, which causes their belly to inflate to enormous proportions. In their bloated state, Tetranadon become very sluggish, yet their attacks become more powerful, capable of shattering earth with a stomp. The Tetranadon's attacks in this state can be described as "sumo-like". Surprisingly, they are capable of jumping high in the air even when their belly is inflated, creating a massive quake when they land. They can be knocked out of the bloated state by receiving enough damage, which leaves them vulnerable for several seconds. They can also spit water globules from their mouth and lift up a boulder when bloated.

Hunting Tips
“ | After a large meal, its movements become sluggish, but don't be fooled; its swings become more weighty and destructive as well! Watch for when it moves slowly, strike true, and it'll belch up its dinner and return to normal. | „

Notes
General Notes
- Its beak, torso, shell, and both individual arms can be broken.
- Tetranadon can inflate its belly in a similar manner to Great Jagras where it becomes slower but its attacks become stronger.
- During this state, Tetranadon can do a slap attack that knocks the hunters to the ground, requiring Wirefall to escape.
- Enough damage done to Tetranadon during this state will force it to deflate and it stumbles to the ground for several seconds.
- Failing to deal enough damage to Tetranadon will result in it manually deflating itself by doing a swiping water beam attack.
- Tetranadon's name derives from tetra (Greek for "four"), rana (Spanish for "frog"), and the suffix -don, which might denote the monster's ancient-like appearance; the "-anadon" part of its name could even be a corruption of anodon (ἀνόδων ), Greek for "toothless", matching the monster's toothless beak. The localized name is intended to match the same references as its Japanese name.
- The Japanese name ヨツミワドウ (Yotsumiwadou) takes the characters 四つ (yotsu) meaning "four" and 蛙 ("kaeru" in general terms, but translates to "wa" in Sino-Japanese) meaning "frog".[2]
- Tetranadon is based off of the Kappa yokai from Japanese folklore, and its characteristics are based on semi-aquatic animals like frogs, crocodiles, turtles, and platypuses.[3]
- Since Kappa love sumo wrestling, Tetranadon was given sumo-like attacks.[4]
- Tetranadon was voted 142th place in the Hunters' Choice for Top Monster during Monster Hunter's 20th Anniversary.[5]
- Tetranadon is the first monster in the series ever to appear in other games (Monster Hunter Riders) even before the game it is introduced in (Monster Hunter Rise) is fully released.
Monster Hunter Rise
- Tetranadon now starts each first encounter by eating food from the ground and inflating.
- It gains a new attack when inflated where it can perform a belly slam followed by a back slam.
- When inflated, it can hop sideways to reposition itself.

- ↑ Similar meaning but different name: Tetranadon is called “Yotsumiwado” in Japanese, and I couldn’t come up with something similar-sounding that rolled off the tongue very well. The Japanese name contains elements of the number four (四つ, “yotsu”) and the word ‘frog’ (蛙, usually “kaeru” but the Sino-Japanese reading is “wa”), so I took the word “tetra” from Greek (which means “four” as I’m sure most Tetris fans are aware), and combined it with “rana,” which is Spanish for “frog.”
- ↑ The Tetranadon was based on kappa, one of the most common yokai in Japanese folklore, with many legends and stories that have spread throughout the country. A kappa is a green creature that is often depicted as a mix between a young boy and a turtle. While Tetranadon’s design obviously does not resemble a young boy, you can definitely notice its turtle heritage. “We looked at creatures that live near water. Turtles, crocodiles… even platypuses!” Ichinose recalls.
- ↑ “Legends say that kappa enjoy sumo wrestling, which is why Tetranadon uses famous sumo wrestling attacks like open-hand strikes, or tsuppari,” Ichinose adds.
