In-game Information

MHW-Vaal Hazak Icon

A grotesque Elder Dragon, that inhabits the deepest part of the Rotten Vale. It uses the fatal vapor of the vale in what appears to be a symbiotic relationship.

Taxonomy

  • Order: Elder Dragon
  • Suborder: Corpse Coat Dragon
  • Family: Vaal Hazak
  • Species: Vaal Hazak and Blackveil Vaal Hazak[1]

Vaal Hazak is an Elder Dragon that inhabits the Rotten Vale, and wears the rotting flesh of dead monsters.

Habitat Range

Vaal Hazak has been known to inhabit the Rotten Vale, where it has control over the effluvium.

Ecological Niche

Like most Elder Dragons, Vaal Hazak's ecological niche is something of a mystery. What is known about this Elder Dragon is that it is capable of manipulating the Effluvium across the Rotten Vale, allowing the Elder Dragon to weaponize the miasma but also utilize it for other purposes. With its unique control over the effluvium, the Vaal Hazak stands at the top of the food chain within the Rotten Vale, dominating and potentially feeding on the likes of the Girros and Raphinos that are present within the Vale. An Odogaron may be bold enough to attack a Vaal Hazak as an apex of the Vale but this apex stands no chance against the power of the Elder Dragon, who will simply repel the beast by utilizing the effluvium around it.

Biological Adaptations

Vaal Hazak has the unique ability to control the concentration of effluvium in the Rotten Vale, and even use it as a defensive barrier against attackers. Whilst the Vaal Hazak has extreme control over the effluvium, the Elder Dragon is incapable of actually generating the natural bacteria which is why Vaal Hazak loses its effluvium barrier as it continues releasing the effluvium within its body. The grotesque carrion that covers the Vaal Hazak acts as a food source for the effluvium bacteria which the Vaal Hazak can then absorb into its body for sustenance, thus creating a form of symbiotic bond with the bacterium across the Vale. Another interesting adaptation of the monster is the unnerving structure of its head, which sports two jaws. The larger outer jaw is used as a means of clamping down its prey whilst the inner is used to force the prey into its throat where the monster can use the effluvium to breakdown the prey as it consumes it. The unnatural anatomy allows the monster to better use its effluvium for regular consumption of prey, portraying how the monster's anatomy has potentially adapted to the bond it has with the naturally occurring miasma.

This unique symbiosis between the Elder Dragon and the bacteria also allows the Vaal Hazak to utilize effluvium to control infected Girros and Raphinos, which are slowly being eating away by the effluvium. As the bacteria influences the monster's behaviour, it creates a connection between the small monster and the Elder Dragon, allowing the Vaal Hazak to absorb the bacterium back into its body in order regain its strength should it need to do so, with the infected monsters dying in the process as the nutrients in their body are sapped by the Elder Dragon.

Behavior

Vaal Hazak is aggressive the instant it feels threatened and will attempted to use its power over the effluvium to defeat its opponent. Vaal Hazak will defend itself against Odogaron when attacked, and will throw it off causing Odogaron to flee the area.
