Where is my queen? Where is my queen? I am storm incarnate, I shall wipe the land clean. So we may meet at last, in paradise unseen.
- Wind Serpent Ibushi, Breath of Ire

Wind Serpent Ibushi is an Elder Dragon first introduced in Monster Hunter Rise.

Appearance

Ibushi is the male of an elder dragon species that consists of itself and the Thunder Serpent Narwa. Similar to Amatsu, this species has a long and leviathan-like body with short, paddle-like hind legs and a long tail. This species also has two sets of jaws, with the lower outer jaw and both inner jaws being split jaws. This species has multiple sacs across the body, namely the forelegs, back, chest, and at the tail tip, which have different properties based on the gender.

Being the male of the species, Ibushi have several traits that sets themselves apart from Narwa. Wind Serpent Ibushi have a hard, spiky, light blue carapace that adorns their otherwise sleek hide. On their head are several narrow horns that point upward, with some angled forward. These horns, along with the spines lining their back are supposedly used to drive off other aerial combatants. The most prominent trait of these dragons, which gives the males their title, are wind sacs which Ibushi uses to float around. These wind sacs are located on the forelegs, back, chest, and tail tips, marked by the presence of glowing tendrils, referred to as "gills", on Ibushi's body. The wind sacs are capable of inflating to a degree and produce a special gas that Ibushi can freely control, which is then primarily used for it's own propulsion by expelling such gas through the gills. When it is angered, its eyes glow a blood red, which is possibly due to its dragon energy flowing through it.

Ibushi are smaller than the female counterpart.

Behavior and Abilities

Not much is known about Ibushi prior to its discovery. However, what is known is that Ibushi wanders around in the sky in search of its "queen", as referred to by Hinoa during their Resonation. Every fifty years, Ibushi, as well as the Thunder Serpent Narwa, emerge to mate with each other. In order to do so, Ibushi will wander the land to seek out Narwa. Ibushi is also known to cause destructive storms by sending large amounts of dragon element into the ground. This turbulence is strong enough to uproot trees and wipe out the landscape. The occurrence of this causes an unnatural wind to spread through the local regions, causing the local monsters to become terrified and flee directly towards the area Kamura Village resides in, and is thus the primary cause of the Rampage.

Ibushi is said to exhibit inexplicable behaviors such as floating upside down in the air. It can send out orbs of dragon element infused wind from its tail, as well as causing air explosions from the wind sacs on its arms. The dragon element Ibushi releases can cause updrafts to appear, which are strong enough to launch hunter's into the air. Ibushi can also breathe a beam of energy from its mouth and create powerful tornadoes.

Like Narwa, Ibushi uses an unknown method, presumably some kind of electromagnetic waves, to communicate and aid in finding each other. Some Wyverians, a race that is said to have great connections with nature and are descended from Wyverns, are able to pick up this signal and speak it into an understandable language, referred to as a "Resonation", as shown by Hinoa when Ibushi first appeared after the first Rampage was dealt with in the village story. However, it is unknown if the Dragon is aware of this. During the Resonation, the eyes of the Resonating Wyverian change to a bright blue color. This phenomenon, however, has no clear explanation.

When Ibushi meets its Narwa mate, it seems to guard the area while Narwa creates the nest. After this is done, Ibushi allows Narwa to start consuming some of its energy, which is described as "lifeforce" with no further confirmation on what it actually is, to seemingly fertilize the latter's eggs, which in the end may kill Ibushi in the process. Once the Narwa consumes enough lifeforce the Narwa inherits Ibushi's control over wind.

Ibushi is more aggressive while guarding the nest and can use wind to rip platforms from the ground, much like how Narwa uses electricity to do so as well. It gains a new attack where it can pull a large amount of rocks and cannons/cannonballs from the ground. These cannon ball filled rocks can then be thrown with enough velocity to detonate them on impact with the ground. A side effect of this attack is pulling nearby ballistae out of the ground that can be used to damage the detonate the cannonballs and deal significant damage to Ibushi.

MHRise-Wind Serpent Ibushi Icon A male elder dragon that exhibits inexplicable behaviors such as floating upside down midair. Research indicates that the emission of a special gas from all over its body, and the modulation of this gas, is what allows it to move freely. It shows air from gills on its arms and tail to fly, creating its own turbulence and soaring to great heights.

Notes

  • Initially, Wind Serpent Ibushi could only be fought at the Red Stronghold as a major threat in High-Rank Rampage Quests. It behaves similar to Apex Monsters (MHRise), primarily targeting hunters but also attacking the fortress gate.
    • Wind Serpent Ibushi cannot be slain here, only repelled. If repelled before the final horde timer expires, it will leave behind several tendrils for hunters to carve materials from.
  • As of Update 3.0, Ibushi can be encountered at the Coral Palace.
    • Here Ibushi can be fought until it gets weakened and then leads to it being slain by Thunder Serpent Narwa who then becomes Narwa the Allmother. Ibushi will then leave some dropped materials in place of carves afterwards that can be collected.
  • Wind Serpent Ibushi is based off the Japanese wind god Fujin. The glowing wind sacs lining Ibushi's body may be inspired by common depictions of Fujin holding a large bag of wind.
